Why We Are Here

The Nishiki Secret Base Museum was established to show how major conflicts between nations affect all of society, even small communities like this one, far from the front lines of combat. The museum tells the story of how the people and the landscape of this peaceful rural area of central Kyushu were transformed into a military installation for the defense of Japan in the final, desperate years of World War II. We hope that the museum and its exhibits will stimulate discussion on the ravages of war, the importance of peace, and the role of governments and citizens in preventing future conflicts.
